Flowers of Rememberance from Christchurch to Sendai

Currently in Christchurch, people are taking part in activities to commemorate the March 11 Great East Japan that occurred here last year. Similar to the tributes they offered in remembrance of those lost in the Christchurch Earthquake, they have begun creating memorials of flowers for those who perished in the Great East Japan Earthquake. As vases for these flower memorials, they are using the road safety cones that can be found throughout the city. Throughout the city, the Christchurch Earthquake destroyed buildings and caused liquefaction in the soil. As construction work to repair the damage began, road safety cones began popping up in huge numbers all over the city. Into these road cones, people began to place memorial flowers. These tributes began thanks to the work of local artist Henry Sunderland. The drawing to the right is from Henry’s Facebook page. Last month, he called for people in Christchurch to put flowers in road cones to commemorate the anniversary of the February 22 Christchurch Earthquake. As you can see in the photographs, wherever you go in the city, memorial flowers are blooming from the cones.

We here at CEA learned about this thanks to an email we received from a woman born in Kessenuma and raised in Sendai. Finding the sentiments expressed in his work inspiring, she sent us the pictures featured below with Henry’s permission. CEA has broadcast information about the road cone flowers activity on Twitter, and is currently considering creating an exhibition about it for the Sendai International Center.
