クライストチャーチに仙台のガス灯が建ちました

 

　クライストチャーチでは、震災からの復興プロジェクトとして、世界21都市からその都市を象徴する街灯を集め、被災した市街地を照らすという取り組み(Scape public art）を行っています。

　今年の11月には、仙台のガス灯もこれに加わりました。

Reporter(リポーター):

Standing tall above Christchurch, this single streetlamp has been sent to the city from Japan. It joins four others that have already been installed along this stretch of Park Terrace. However this lamp carries a special meaning. In the wake of the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes, Sendai city was rocked by a magnitude nine earthquake. A giant tsunami then struck the Tohoku region, killing 15,000 people. Now the City of Sendai hopes that this lamp will bond the two cities together.

 

クライストチャーチ市にそびえ立つこの街灯は、日本から送られてきたものです。パークテラスにはすでに4つの街灯が設置されています。しかし、この街灯には特別な意味があります。2011年のクライストチャーチ地震の後、仙台市はマグニチュード9の地震に見舞われました。その後、巨大な津波が東北地方を襲い、15,000人の方が亡くなりました。仙台市は、この街灯が2つの都市の絆を深めることを願っています。

Being part of this project, Moving Forward as One, together as both cities that have been through large-scale earthquakes, partaking in this project will help with the recovery of both Christchurch and Sendai City.

 

今回のプロジェクトに参加することで、大規模な地震を経験した両都市として共に前へクライストチャーチ市と仙台市の復興の一助になると考えています。

 

 

Reporter(リポーター):

Sendai's coastal region was badly hit, thousands of people lost their homes. Sendai now wants this lamppost to be a gesture of solidarity for Christchurch.

 

仙台の沿岸部は大きな被害を受け、何千人もの人々が家を失いました。仙台は今、この街灯をクライストチャーチ市への連帯の意思表示としたいと考えています。

 

 

Interpreter(通訳・Kaleb Uri-ke ケイレブ ウリキ):

Even though Christchurch and Sendai are separated by around ten thousand kilometres, by participating in this project, it brings both Christchurch and Sendai closer together.

 

クライストチャーチ市と仙台市は約1万キロ離れていますが、このプロジェクトに参加することで、クライストチャーチと仙台の距離が縮まります。

 

 

Reporter(リポーター):

The artist behind the project is looking forward to the end of 2015 when 21 lampposts will line the street, each one from a different country and culture.

 

このプロジェクトを手がけたアーティストは、2015年末に21本の街灯が通りに並び、それぞれが異なる国や文化のものになることを楽しみにしています。

 

 

Misha Kuball(ミシャ・クバル・Artist・アーティスト):

If a city suffers such a strong event, it may feel that it's kind of on its own, it's separated, because of the networking of Solidarity Grid, I think it shows strong solidarity which goes from Christchurch to a lot of international cities.

 

ある都市がこのような大規模災害に見舞われた場合、その都市は孤立しているように感じるかもしれませんが、「ソリダリティ・グリッド」のネットワーク化により、クライストチャーチ市から多くの国際都市に至るまでの強力な連帯感を示すことができると思います。

 

 

Reporter(リポーター):

The cities sending lampposts to Christchurch include Serbia, Sydney, Dusseldorf, and Belgrade. The artist's vision is fast becoming a reality.

 

クライストチャーチ市に街灯を送っている都市は、セルビア、シドニー、デュッセルドルフ、ベオグラードなどです。このアーティストのビジョンは、急速に現実のものとなってきています。

 

 

Misha Kuball(ミシャ・クバル・Artist・アーティスト):

It was a dream, that first of all it was an idea and to make it happen it was a lot of work behind the scene, behind the curtain, invisible work done, by the team of Scape, by the City Council and then it kind of merges and matches here.

 

夢のような話ですが、まずアイデアがあって、それを実現するためには、舞台裏やカーテンの裏で、目に見えない仕事がたくさんあって、「スケープ」のチームや市議会がやってくれて、それがここで合流して一致したという感じです。

 

 

Reporter(リポーター):

Sendai's lamppost is unique and features a bronze cast statue of the founder of Sendai. The Japanese hopes he watches over Christchurch.

 

仙台市の街灯はユニークで、仙台の創始者の銅の像が設置されています。クライストチャーチを見守ってくれることを願っています。

 

 

Interpreter(通訳・Kaleb Uri-ke ケイレブ ウリキ):

The person on top of the lamp is Date Masamune, he's the founder of Sendai or the feudal lord of Sendai City from 1601.

 

街灯の上にいるのは伊達政宗で、仙台の創始者、1601年からの仙台藩主です。

 

 

Interpreter(通訳・Kaleb Uri-ke ケイレブ ウリキ):

So these street lamps started around 30 years ago when they were set up and as you can see on top, Date Masamune, he overlooks Sendai and protects Sendai, so to take him from Sendai and bring him all the way to Christchurch and set him up there, he hopes that he will also overlook Christchurch and protect Christchurch as well.

 

この街灯が設置されたのは30年ほど前で、上に乗っている伊達政宗は、仙台を見下ろし、仙台を守っているので、仙台からはるばるクライストチャーチ市に連れてきて設置することで、クライストチャーチ市も見渡し、クライストチャーチ市を守ってほしいと願っているのです。

 

 

Reporter(リポーター):

The plan is for an app to launch featuring stories of each of the lamps. The project will wrap up at the end of next year but the lampposts will continue watching over Christchurch for years to come. Marcus Gibbs, CTV News.

 

今後は、それぞれの街灯のストーリーを収録したアプリの配信も予定しています。このプロジェクトは来年末に終了しますが、街灯はこれからもずっとクライストチャーチ市を見守り続けます。CTVニュースのマーカス・ギブスでした。
