CHCH支援イベント　９/８（木）に開催！Support Christchurch Event: Thursday, September 8

　ＮＺ・クライストチャーチ出身。2007年から仙台在住。仙台市の国際交流員として，市の外国籍市民や留学生の支援，国際化や国際交流に関わる仕事をしている。故郷クライストチャーチの支援活動を始めた矢先に，3.11の東日本大震災で被災。震災直後は，多くの外国人が仙台を離れる中，在住外国人支援に奔走した。現在は，休日を利用して被災した沿岸地域でボランティア活動を行っている。

　

　6月に，震災後初めてニュージーランドに一時帰国。一時は休止していた故郷への支援活動も再開させ，支援を募っている。

　仙台市内の有志で，地震被害にあったクライストチャーチ支援のために募金活動を行っています。3.11の震災で活動中止に追い込まれましたが，「この震災で世界の関心が薄れてしまったクライストチャーチを，同じ被災地になってしまった仙台から支援していくのは大切」との思いで，活動を再開させました。

　現在は，現地の子ども支援施設への寄付など，募金のより効果的な使い道を探っています。

 

Christchurch and Sendai: Working Together, We Can Recover from the Earthquake.

 

CEA in Sendai will be holding a presentation on its activities to help earthquake-damaged Christchurch. A member of our group who is a native of New Zealand but resides in Sendai will be sharing information he collected during a trip home in June. We will also be reporting on our activities to help Sendai recover from the March 11 earthquake.

Speaker: Kaleb Urike

Kaleb is a native of New Zealand who has lived in Sendai since 2007. He currently holds the post of CIR (Coordinator of International Relations) in the Sendai International Center where he works supporting foreigners in the city and coordinating international culture events for all residents. Right before initiating charity efforts to raise donations for his hometown of Christchurch, the March 11 Great East Japan Earthquake struck his current home of Sendai. While many foreigners left Japan in the aftermath of the disaster, Kaleb remained to assist those who stayed in Japan. Currently, on his days off he goes to the coastal areas ravaged by the tsunami to help in recovery efforts there.

 

In June, he returned to New Zealand for the first time since the earthquake in Christchurch. He has once again begun working on the recovery efforts for his hometown that he was forced to put on hold by the earthquake in Japan.

We are a group of volunteers in Sendai City who organize events to collect donations for the earthquake recovery in Christchurch. While we were forced to suspend operations in the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake, we have restarted our activities as we believe it is especially important to support Christchurch now due to the fact that the international community’s attention has shifted from the damage in Christchurch to the damage in Japan.

We are currently investigating organizations in Christchurch (e.g., children’s charities) that we feel would be able to best utilize the donations we collect.
