ニュージーランド南島中部、カンタベリー平野東海岸側に位置する都市。

ニュージーランド内で3番目、南島では最大の街です。

街の中心には19世紀に建てられた「クライストチャーチ大聖堂」や、

740を超える公園を持つきれいな街並みから「ガーデンシティ（庭の街）」と

呼ばれています。

 

Christchurch is located on the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand, in an area called the Canterbury Plains, and is the country's second-largest urban area. The Christchurch Cathedral is the geographical center and heart of the city and, with more than 740 parks, Christchurch is known as the Garden City.

　2011年2月22日、現地時間午後0時51分に地震は発生しました。

 マグニチュードは6.3。 　3月4日現在、亡くなった方は160人以上に

上っています。

Damage from the Earthquake

 

A 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck Christchurch City on February 22 at 12.51 pm. The death toll stands at 166. (stuff.co.nz, 7/3/2011)

死者数181人、負傷者300人以上、200人以上が行方不明。停電は約2万世帯、断水は約5万世帯にも及びました。日本人留学生など28人も犠牲になりました。

また観測史上最大規模の液状化現象が発生し、被害家屋は4-5万棟に上るとされています。観光が大きな産業となっているため、経済への影響は大きく、未だに中心街は立ち入り禁止となっているため、復興の目処が立っていません。（Wikipedia）

 

Update of Damage from the Earthquake

 

The death toll from the Christchurch Earthquake has risen from 166 to 181, with more than 300 people sustaining injuries and more than 200 people still missing. Around 20 000 households are without electricity and 50 000 households without water. The death toll of Japanese international students stands at 28.

Liquefaction has caused damage to between 40 000-50 000 households and the earthquake will have a long time effect on the tourism industry and the local economy. The central part of the city will remain closed until further inspections have been completed on all buildings. (1/10/2001, Wikipedia)
